  • Veterinarians in the building around the clock
  • High-level intensive care unit (ICU) for critically ill pets, including advanced monitoring, wireless telemetry, pain management, IV therapy, and nutritional support

  • Expert surgical and anesthesia services are provided in our three state-of-the-art operating suites with a dedicated recovery ward

When is it an Emergency?

If you’re uncertain about whether your pet needs emergency care, simply call us at 505-416-5840 at any time, night or day. Our experienced staff will help determine if it makes sense to bring your pet to Mosaic Animal for emergency care, or if it’s safe to wait until your primary care veterinarian is available.

In general, though, it’s smart to seek emergency care right away in these situations:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Bleeding that does not stop within 5 minutes
  • Breathing difficulty (blue mucus membranes or tongue, increased respiratory rate and effort) or choking
  • Collapse or inability to stand or walk
  • End-of-life care
  • Heatstroke: heavy panting, weakness, fever, collapse
  • Inability to urinate: straining (especially in cats), no urine produced, blood in the urine
  • Ingestion of any toxins, including but not limited to prescription, over-the-counter or illegal drugs, chocolate, rodenticides (D-con), grapes or raisins, nicotine, artificial sweeteners, and household cleaners. (Please call poison control and bring the container with you, if possible)
  • Loss of balance or consciousness, convulsions, or seizure activity.
  • Reproductive emergencies: infection of the uterus, dystocia, difficult births
  • Snake envenomation
  • Swollen or distended abdomen (bloat).
  • Trauma: hit by a car, falling from a height or blunt force trauma, bite wounds, lacerations, gunshot wounds
  • Vomiting or diarrhea with blood

What to Expect During an ER Visit

If possible, please complete the form below prior to your arrival:

When you arrive at our hospital, your pet will undergo triage by our team. Triage is an initial assessment to determine how urgently your pet needs treatment. Please understand that pets with less-severe health issues will be seen after those with more urgent needs and wait times may be longer.

After triage is completed, the emergency veterinarian will examine your pet, discuss an individualized plan for their care and treatment, and we’ll provide a cost estimate.

For your convenience, we offer a range of payment options for emergency care.

Our client areas and rooms were designed with you in mind. Comfortable seating, charging stations for your devices, office space for doing work, coffee, popcorn, and even a client lounge to relax in while we care for your pet.

Ensuring a Fear-Free Hospital Visit

We understand that an emergency visit is stressful for you and your pet. That’s why Mosaic Animal has chosen to partner with Fear Free to receive dedicated training and facility certification as the state’s ONLY fear free emergency and specialty hospital.

Fear Free is a new concept in veterinary medicine that aims to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress associated with a visit to the veterinary hospital. It requires active communication between the pet owner and the veterinary team, and the reward is a better experience and less stress for all involved—especially your pet.

Take comfort in knowing that we also embrace the Zero Pain Philosophy, affirming our commitment to all forms of comfort for our patients.
